Terruel Declaration
Europe: another kind of feeding is possible
The dominant farm-produce model in Europe is the origin of serious food crises and malnutrition undergone by the populations (Dioxin, mad cow, aphthous fever etc.). This model tends more and more to concentrate food-related decision powers in the hands of a limited number of corporate groups, the which are gradually enforcing culinary standards and food habits that reduce or even eliminate a large part of the cultural and alimentary diversity of all European societies. In the same way, democratic systems of participation and social control over deciding authorities for policies affecting food issues are seen to weaken.
This farm-produce system caused very negative results on the European population, as shown by the figures of the World Health Organization for the year 2000: 130 million Europeans suffer from food-related diseases; deficient practice of breast-feeding lead to malnutrition of children and compromise their growth; micronutrient deficiencies are important: 16% of the population suffer iodine deficiency, 20 to 30% of adults are obese, the figures are significantly increasing among young people; one third of cardio-vascular and cancerous diseases are directly related to an unbalanced feeding pattern.
