Workshop presentation

The evolution of the role and status of women has been very rapid in the two societies, under the influence of many factors ranging from urbanisation to the shift of the economy from agriculture toward service, from reflections on gender inequality and the putting into question of patriarchal models to fertility control, and from the demand for freedom to the ascendency of the consumption society. Women are simultaneously actors and objects of these transformations and are at the heart of the evolution of Chinese and European societies. For all that, the strongly demanded equality in status and powers does not make for an asexual society.

Women, through their central and widely perpetuated duel role as managers of families, parents and educators have a special and particularly important way of looking at the challenges and evolution of their society. They take on a predominant responsibility in society through the many roles they play. They also remain, through their role within families, major actors of evolution in lifestyles and consumption styles. How do they view or suffer these transformations in the two societies? How can they better take on their individual and collective responsibility faced with our future?

It will be the role of the workshop to bring out similarities and differences and to outline the prospects.
